In Watching the English - The Hidden Rules of English Behaviour (2004), Kate Fox comes to the reassuring conclusion that "Englishness is not a matter of birth, race, colour or creed: it is a mind-set, an ethos, a behavioural 'grammar' - a set of unwritten codes that might seem enigmatic, but that anyone can decipher and apply, now that we have the key." If it was quite that simple, one might wonder why the English are currently so keenly discussing a potential Brexit - clearly the rest of Europe must have failed to decipher them correctly?
In this course, we are going to look at intercultural encounters between Britain and the rest of Europe (Germany specifically), and at how British cultural identities have evolved in a distinctly European framework in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. In various thematic clusters we are going to discuss Britain's influence on Europe and vice versa in literature, film, music, popular culture, and politics (with a focus on a potential Brexit). You will have to prepare readings/viewings for each session.
Texts: The texts will be made available on Moodle. |
