This intensive Proseminar in Blockform is designed to introduce students to the core empirical domains of English compositional semantic, equipping them with formal tools required for such investigations and prepare them for a follow-up HS in Semantics. The main objective of this course is to introduce the methods and applications of contemporary theoretical semantics. To accomplish this and carry out our aims, we will work with theory of formal semantics as outlined in Heim & Kratzer (1998) using this as our guide. This text commonly used to explain a wide variety of natural language phenomena, especially concerning issues at the syntax-semantics interface. We shall focus on analyzing English fragments and work up to sentences in order to train ourselves in this program. A syllabus will be provided per email to students in September with some light preparatory reading. |
