This seminar will seek to discuss its topic on different levels. For instance, we will look at environmental issues in early modern England, at early modern literary traditions informing the representations of natural environments, and we will look at the ways in which recent ecocritical approaches have read Shakespeare’s works. While doing all this, we will also discuss Shakespeare and his art in general, and we will read the plays as works of art that exceed any thematic focus. We will largely focus on two plays, the comedy As You Like It and the tragedy King Lear. Excerpts from other works by Shakespeare will also be used, and they will be made available.
