There is no doubt that the sea figures prominently in the British cultural and literary imagination. In order to trace changing conceptions of the sea and examine its cultural ‘construction’ by means of literature, in this seminar we will read and analyse in detail texts of the Romantic and Victorian periods. We will scrutinise representations of the sea in British literary classics such as Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s poem ”The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” (1798), Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island (1883), Joseph Conrad’s Lord Jim as well as lesser-known texts by female writers Charlotte Smith and Felicia Dorothea Hemans.
Texts: Students must use the set texts in the following editions:
Stevenson, Robert Louis. Treasure Island. 1883. London: Oxford UP, 2011. Oxford World’s Classics.
Conrad, Joseph. Lord Jim. 1900. London: Penguin, 2007. Penguin Classics.
Further texts will be made available at the beginning of the semester. |
