When the Stuart King Charles II was restored to the British throne in 1660, the public theatre in London was revived – it had been prohibited since 1642. But the theatre under the new king was markedly different from the theatre before the civil war and the Commonwealth, for instance in the architecture of the theatres and in the introduction of actresses. The Restoration era’s power structures and its hunger for life were translated onto the stage particularly in the new comedies written for new audiences. After a general look at main trends and events of the Restoration era, we will closely read three Restoration comedies: William Wycherley’s The Country Wife (1675), Aphra Behn’s The Rover (1677) and William Congreve’s The Way of the World (1700).
You must have read The Country Wife by the second meeting.
