Contemporary social conflicts often concern social identities and self-perceptions regarding ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation etc. In this seminar, we will discuss the construction of identity in language regarding such more stable social roles, but also more fleeting conceptualizations as negotiated momentary selves. This will necessarily be done from an interdisciplinary perspective, including fields such as narratology, conversation analysis, ethnomethodology, sociology and social psychology. Topics include a historical perspective on the conceptualization of the self and a questioning of Euro-centric views. We will have three longer on-campus sessions (dates see LSF), but also a number of online meetings Fr 8:30 – 10 (dates tba in the first session) in the course of the term. Assignments consist of an exam, a presentation and an abstract of a small research project. |
