Students enrolled in this class will get to engage in current central issues in pragmatics and its interfaces. This involves theoretical, experimental, and corpus-based studies on issues such as presuppositions and not-at-issue content, different types of implicatures, focus and others. We will also address questions of language acquisition and language change in the area of pragmatics. In order to refresh introductory knowledge and have a clear understanding of the concepts used, participants are strongly encouraged to have read B. Birner’s Introduction to Pragmatics (Blackwell) before the beginning of class. |
