In this seminar, we will achieve two goals: (A) an analysis of the evolution of certain prominent constructions in English in terms of form and meaning, (B) a consideration of text types used in the language. Rather than following a classical approach, in which the stages of the language beginning with Old English would be considered in terms of their morphosyntactic features, we will go backwards in time and through texts. That is, we will begin with late Modern English and see what characteristics define the pieces of discourse found. A key question we will also raise: Is there a grammar of particular text types and if so, what is its relationship with the mainstream grammar of the same period? |
