In this class, we will revisit all fields of English linguistics while travelling around the globe. Varieties discussed include the Caribbean, Australia, Africa, and Asia. We will consider historical developments and social contexts to understand World Englishes today, their general sound, word and grammar patterns. Finally, we will discuss conflicting opinions and social values attached to the different varieties of English, including International English or English as lingua franca.
The class will have a hybrid format: We will have three block sessions on campus (Fri 8-12, cf. LSF for the dates). The remaining nine sessions will be taught online (Fri 9 –10) and with the help of self-learning activities. Students will have to pass a test, do a presentation, and devise a small-scale linguistic project. |
