The cold war was dominated by the two power blocks that formed around the two superpowers that came into being at the end of the Second World War, the USSR and the USA. At the same time the United Kingdom, a former world power, found itself a minor power – now a member of the Western alliance – that had to come to terms with the loss of its empire. The two novels and their film and television adaptations we will focus on in this seminar were both written at the height of the cold war: Ian Fleming’s James Bond-novel From Russia With Love (1957) and John le Carré’s The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1963). In different ways, they comment on the antagonism and the absurdity of the cold war from British perspectives.
