This seminar will examine a selection of linguistic and background features (historical and socio-linguistic) available in typical contact situations of English. We will consider the results of sociolinguistic interaction and partly bilingualism with Celtic, Asian, and West-African languages, but also e.g. French and Hindi. The main situations analyzed will include issues of pidgins and creoles, but also e.g. semi-/de-creolization and language shift.
