The course introduces a formal model of how truth-conditional meaning is assigned to English sentence structures, using the formal tool of set theory.
Based on this model, we investigate syntactic and semantic differences between English and German by example of selected phenomena such as word order variation, the properties of quantifiers and other scope-bearing elements, and polarity items. Some background knowledge on generative syntax is a prerequisite for this course. |
