Imagining what is not human, we may learn more about what we understand by the category of the human – how we define and seek to understand ourselves. In the twenty-first century, the human as well as humanism are interrogated by literary texts, films and TV / streaming series that offer visions of technologically and psychologically extended humanities. In some of these fictions, these transhuman / superhuman qualities are indispensable because the earth is no longer habitable for unenhanced human beings. At the same time, there are speculations about the successors of humanity. What will replace humans and the very category of the human as the dominant lifeform on our planet? These questions are not new, but the answers given in the twenty-first century arguably are. In this seminar, we will first read some posthumanist and transhumanist theory before we closely analyse and contextualise a number of verbal and visual texts, such as Jeanette Winterson’s novel Frankissstein, two episodes of the TV series Black Mirror, and the film Blade Runner 2049.
