This course will introduce you to the work of three Black British authors who started their literary careers in the last decade: Derek Owusu (*1988), Yrsa Daley-Ward (*1984), and Candice Carty-Williams (*1989). Derek Owusu is an author and podcaster. His debut novel That Reminds Me (2019) was published by #MerkyBooks, an imprint by Penguin House and UK rapper Stormzy, whose mission it is to publish underrepresented voices. Yrsa Daley-Ward is a model, actor, and writer who launched her literary career as a poet on Instagram. We are going to read selected poems from her first poetry collection bone (2014). Candice Carty-Williams is the author of the best-selling novel Queenie (2019), which has been marketed as the Black version of Helen Fielding’s chick-lit classic Bridget Jones’s Diary. Although these texts belong to different literary genres, they all deal with discourses of race and gender and represent coming-of-age experiences in the majority-white society of the UK. Far from telling stories of a post-racial age, they offer perspectives which are still marginalised in the British literary market, delving into their protagonists’ daily struggles with norms of masculinity/femininity, sexuality, racism, relationships, family, and mental health (content warning: self-harm, suicide attempt). Besides discussing these topics, this course will also provide you with an introduction to Critical Race and Critical Whiteness Theory, Masculinity Studies, and Gender Studies.
