The three plays we will closely read in this seminar belong to a group of Shakespeare plays which do not easily conform to genre expectations. They offer conflicting, sometimes contradictory elements and plotlines that are sometimes bewildering to readers and performers of Shakespeare alike. These conflicting elements and tendencies constitute essential parts of their structures. In this seminar, we will closely read and contextualise three of these plays, which are all different in their content matter, style and performative possibilities. Although they do not invite easy categorisations, or perhaps exactly because of this, these three plays are vintage Shakespeare: they are joys to read, and they abound with thought-provoking plots, scenes and characters.
