Due to the increasing internationalization of universities in Germany and in other countries academic staff faces specific intercultural challenges. Teaching students from a wide range of cultural backgrounds or teaching in another country often requires new ways of thinking, a different comprehension of pedagogy and a review of one’s own ideas of teaching and learning.
Despite a strong international dominance of European and North American concepts regarding teaching and learning, there are still differences in the way we assess e.g. “good course design”, “successful learning” or “efficient teaching” as well as the respective strategies and methods to achieve our aims as teaching staff.
In addition to international teaching basics, the workshop also deals with culturally different teaching and learning approaches as well as culturally diverse contexts. Furthermore, teachers get the chance to work on their international teaching skills with the help of texts, case studies and interactive exercises. The goal is to adopt a flexible teaching style more suited to an international audience, to find ways to connect with culturally diverse students and to feel more confident in an intercultural teaching and learning environment.
Workshop Instructor: Dr. Thomas Schmidtgall is a Research Associate at the Center for Key Competencies and University Didactics at Saarland University where he teaches and coordinates a wide range of key competencies. He holds a PhD in cultural studies and has a special expertise in the field of intercultural competence (French-speaking, English-speaking and Spanish-speaking cultures). He has also various working experience in teaching international students as well as in international projects. |
