In this seminar, we will engage with the work of transcultural author Jackie Kay. Kay was born in Edinburgh to a Scottish mother and Nigerian father and subsequently adopted by a white couple. Informed by her own life, her work centers on questions of racial, ethnic and sexual identities from a particular transcultural perspective. Among other things, she engages with the Atlantic slave trade and with characters from non-British and mixed-race backgrounds. In order to explore these issues in her writing, we will read selected poems, short stories, and her novel Trumpet (1998). |
