MODULE "Writing for academic purposes"
Instructors: Dr. Henry Rademacher, Dan Honert
Description: The aim of this course is to improve students’ academic writing skills with a view to successfully composing a research paper or PhD thesis. We will take a close look at various aspects of academic writing, for instance:
- Structure of an academic paper
- Paragraph and sentence structure
- Cohesion and coherence
- Summarising and Paraphrasing
- Academic lexis and grammar
- Punctuation
- Classic mistakes and how to avoid them
There will be a certain degree of flexibility in the course structure to meet individual students’ needs. Students might, for example, be expected to bring in writing examples. They will work together with the instructors to address specific issues and improve their writing in accordance with the conventions of English academic style. Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this course, students will have:
- developed an awareness of the features of academic writing
- developed the skill to self-correct their writing
- improved their academic planning skills, especially with regard to paper outlining and chapter structure
- improved their academic writing skills, especially with regard to efficient paragraph writing, precise word choice, accurate language use and summarising/paraphrasing
