We are living in a world that is divided into national states. These states control their borders. Moreover, individuals are not free to choose citizenship in a specific state. They are often assigned citizenship in specific states by criteria such as ancestry and place of birth.
At least when individuals wish to migrate or wish to adopt a new nationality it becomes obvious that borders and citizenship may be morally questioned and require moral justification when they are used to exclude outsiders.
In this seminar we will look at different defenses as well as challenges for the justification of the excluding role of national states and citizenship. We will look both at the justifications for excluding migrants as such and at specific challenges when dealing with refugees.
The seminar will be held in English. Students may give a presentation (Referat) with a written version (Ausarbeitung) or write a slightly longer paper (Hausarbeit). Both texts, Ausarbeit and Hausarbeit, may be written either in English or in German. |
