In this lecture, we will address a central issue of linguistic research: How does knowledge of language evolve from the apparent most basic beginnings of speech articulation to the visible development of certain morphological mechanisms and the structure of complex sentences? The class will begin with a strong focus on the first language acquisition of English, but contrastive issues and in particular issues of second-language acquisition will also be addressed. It will be useful to have successfully completed at least one of the introductions we offer in English linguistics before attending the lecture. |
