In this seminar, we will explore both classical topics in the study of meaning and new approaches to semantic variation between English and other languages. Students will be offered intros to key concepts and will be encouraged to do a contrastive project (e.g. involving a contrast between English and German or another language). Please note that some previous solid introduction to semantics (e.g. in the sense of Heim & Kratzer 1998 or at least Beck & Gergel 2014) is strongly recommended. In case you did not have a chance to take one, you are encouraged to attend in some form e.g. Jonathan Watkins' proseminar which will be starting in compact form early October. |
