In this lecture, we will take an overview tour of the major periods of the English language from Old English to Late Modern English and the present. We will analyze diachronic stages of the language and their connections to current varieties. Historically, we consider developments such as the dramatic loss of inflections, the trend towards analytical status of the English language and the major sound changes that have taken place. In synchronic terms, we will pay particular attention to those linguistic areas and varieties in which traces of the past can be interestingly reconstructed.
