The seminar focuses on exploring international business communication from a linguistic perspective. We will focus in particular on face-to-face communication in low-stakes (small talk) and high-stakes (negotiations) contexts, mostly in English as a Lingua franca contexts (ELF / BELF). Particular focus areas are discourse structure, lexis, negotiation of meaning and identity, codeswitching, and cooperation in an international context. A key area of interest is webcare, advertising and discourse in social media environments, such as Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. Participants will work with existing datasets and also compile own analyses of existing data, in particular analyzing existing examples of customer communication and interaction. Course requirements are detailed in the respective module descriptions.
