The language of food will be investigated across genres and time with regard to the uses it fulfils for English speakers. Discourses or text types include the recipe and its modern forms (food blogs, cooking shows) or talk at the dinner table. We will discuss food both as trade products (e.g. labelling rules on packages or signs in supermarkets) and as lifestyle choices (e.g. food porn or veganism). Hauptfach / Lehramt students are expected to do a presentation and write a paper at the end of the term. Nebenfach students will have to do graded presentations.
Some background knowledge on generative syntax and formal semantics is helpful for this course, but not strictly required. |
