This class will introduce you to leading concepts of media history, media theory and media analysis. In order to compare the various strategies, possibilities and limitations of individual media ‘products’, we will focus on representations of King Henry VIII who ruled from 1509 until his death in 1547. Over the course of these thirty-eight years, Henry VIII became one of Great Britain’s most iconic and most frequently represented monarchs (maybe only surpassed by his daughter, Elizabeth I). Beginning with early modern representations of the king, we will first analyse paintings and letters before moving on to contemporary fictional portrayals of Henry on the page and on screen. We will discuss relevant parts of A Man for All Seasons (1966, dir. Fred Zinneman), Showtime’s The Tudors (2007-2010), Hilary Mantel’s novels about Thomas Cromwell’s rise at Henry’s court, Wolf Hall (2009) and Bring Up the Bodies (2012) and the BBC’s adaptation of Mantel’s novels in Wolf Hall (2015).
In order to gain full credit for this class, students will have to give a short presentation and pass the final written exam.
