In this course we are going to discuss five recent British and Irish films: Richard Ayoade’s Submarine (2010), John Michael McDonagh’s The Guard (2011), Ken Loach’s The Angel’s Share (2012), Amma Asante’s Belle (2013) and Ken Loach’s I, Daniel Blake (2016). In addition to providing an introduction to film analysis, this course draws on selected approaches from cultural studies to examine representations of class, race, and gender, as well as regional identities (i.e. Welshness, Scottishness, and Irishness). The films will be screened in class. Students are required to compile a portfolio in the course of the semester, consisting of five assignments (one assignment per film) and a final essay in the last week of term. |
