The seminar will have both theoretical and practical parts. The work will be organised in form of small projects that can be carried out in groups of 2-3 students. Individual work is also possible. In the end, every student needs to present the results of the project which will be in the end of the seminar (10/17.07.2019) in an oral presentation and submit a report in form of an abstract (1-2 pages).

In this seminar, we will first learn the main concepts of discourse, including different approaches on the discourse-related linguistic phenomena. The overview of discourse theories will be provided from the point of view of relations and conceptions. We will compare different theories and approaches, also from a multilingual perspective. We will also learn about the studies of discourse in machine translation. Then, we will use corpus-based methods to analyse these phenomena in both non-translated and translated texts, including those produced with machine translation systems.
