EUROPEAN INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE AS A RESOURCE FOR CULTURE AND LEISURE INDUSTRIES

Industrial heritage is an important part of world cultural heritage. Many post-industrial sites are currently essential elements of tourist market as well as
a popular venues for culture, art, entertainment and recreation. The approach towards the tangible and intangible legacy of Industrial Revolution has changed within the last half century. It has evolved from a complete lack of understanding of its resources to a full acceptance and appreciation. Today the industrial heritage
is well received by a wide range of target groups. For many experts it became a field of multidisciplinary research, whereas for many tourists and users it became a part of leisure time offers. When approached holistically and considering its multidimensional character it constitutes an important part of conscious cultural heritage management.

The aim of the course is the analysis of industrial heritage resources in Europe in the context of the development of the offers in tourism and culture sectors and the presentation of the most significant case studies and different approaches by EU countries. Students will learn about the history of the industrialization and deindustrialization process as well as its consequences. They will become familiar with the definitions, attributes of the phenomenon and theoretical models of approaches. At the end of the course students will be able to recognize, demonstrate and analyze particular examples of industrial heritage in practise.

  • the choice of historical post-industrial site,
  • the attempt of brief description of the various initial conditions and circumstances in which the given site functions and its valorisation,
  • presenting the idea for its adaptation.

The case study will require written form of the answers for the given questions/instructions (an essay between 5 and 8 pages):

1. Chose a post-industrial site/monument (in Germany or other EU country) which has not been yet adapted for new functions.

2. Short analysis of:

  • sites history;
  • previous functions, forms of using, relations between the site and local community (inhabitants, workers), infrastructural links  between the site and its surroundings (transport system, other industrial sites, etc.);
  • current ownership structure and its conservation; who is the site`s and the real estate owner, who is responsible for it conservation, what is the technical condition, to what extend it is protected (monuments register), is the parcel considered a wasteland (contaminated)?;
  • valorisation of its cultural value such as: authenticity, integrity, uniqueness (how important it was in micro/macro scale or the branches of industry in which it functioned), aesthetic/artistic/architectural value, emotional – connected with the identity of local community, the value connected with intangible aspects of industrial heritage, what is the site`s image;
  • reasons why the site is no longer used?;
  • what actions have been recently implemented in order to persevere or adapt the site;
  • the site`s availability means of transport connections, its location, the distance between the site and the town`s centre.

3. What are three main advantages and disadvantages of the site?

4. What are the stakeholders groups (from public and private sector) for the planned adaptation? What are their motivations and interests? For whom and if the planned changes will be beneficial? Who can initiate them?

5. Indicate what functions can the site be adapted to e.g.: touristic purposes, recreation, culture, art, entertainment (event places), education or commercial purposes e.g. for creative industry, IT, design.

6. Why should the given site be persevered and adapted to a particular functions?

7. Will the new role be respecting site`s character? Will the suggested solutions prioritize the perseverance of historical buildings and their reconstruction, regenerating or will they assume a major alteration.

8. May the given function/s be assumed a profitable concept?

9. As a conclusion perform an analysis of the site based on the Business Model Canvas by Alexander Oterwalder and Yves Pigneur (Osterwalder A., Pigneur Y. 2010: Business Model Generation. A Handbook for Visionaries, Game Changers and Challengers, PJohn Wiley & Sons, Inc. Hoboken, New Jersey,). This model allows to identify the key elements essential for any business project functioning and allows to describe the way any organizations create and provide their customers with the value.
