What do e.g. Standard English, African American English, and Kiezdeutsch for that matter, have in common? They are the results of language contact situations of various types. In the course of this lecture, we will take a systematic look at the issue of language contact and cover the characteristics of a broad range of relevant varieties, by focusing on English, but also considering some other languages contrastively. Important topics will be the formation of pidgins and creoles (as e.g. in Jamaican English), language shift (as in Ireland or Singapore), language death (as in the case of some Gaelic varieties), but also key structural aspects in the varieties under investigations.
