Lerninhalte
This course is designed primarily for ERASMUS and other exchange students who are studying Applied Linguistics, Translation, and similar subjects. It is worth 3 ECTS points.
It is followed by a separate English vocabulary course in summer semester, which is also worth 3 ECTS points. The CEFR Level of both courses is C1. The aim of both courses is to increase students' command of English vocabulary. In summer semester, we begin with a brief theoretical introduction. This is followed by practical work on derivational morphology, vocabulary in context, semantic relations
between vocabulary items, and many other topics. We will explore particular areas of English vocabulary in depth. We will also look briefly at the history of dictionaries and thesauruses.
Particular emphasis will be placed on expanding students' command of academic vocabulary. Students are encouraged to participate actively and to introduce topics of their own as well. The companion course, in winter semester, will cover topic areas that were not covered in winter; some of the work in each semester will be related to current sociopolitical and
socioeconomic developments. In each semester, there are weekly exercise sheets to complete, plus a final assignment to be handed in. For further information, see: http://www.spence.saar.de/courses/lexis ERASMUS and other exchange students may also be interested in my ERASMUS courses "Exploring English Grammar -- the world of groups and phrases" (Tuesday 10 a.m. to 12)
and "Written Expression"; the latter runs exactly parallel with "[spr] Written Expression / Written Expression (Intermediate)", groups 4 and 6, so students in fact have three alternative
times at which they can take my Written Expression course (Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m.). My B.A. course "[spr] Phonetics with Listening Practice (British)" (Tuesday or Wednesday 4 to 6 p.m.) may also be of interest to some Erasmus students, but the number of available
places is limited.
