The time span we will discuss in this lecture course begins with the death of Queen Elizabeth I and the end of the House of Tudor on the British throne in 1603, and it ends on the eve of the Restoration of the Stuart monarchy in 1660 (which we will discuss in the next semester). It comprises the reigns of James I, Charles I and the period of the Commonwealth or the interregnum respectively. As in previous semesters, we will not view the literature and culture of this time span as absolutely determined by political history, but it makes sense to follow the common historical epochs. The first half of the seventeenth century saw the expansion of British influence and trade. It was also a continued golden era for literature and the theatre, mainly in England. Among the authors to be discussed are: John Donne, William Shakespeare, Sir Francis Bacon, George Herbert, Aemilia Lanyer, Ben Jonson, Thomas Middleton, Robert Burton, Sir Thomas Browne, John Webster, Mary Wroth, Katherine Philips, Robert Herrick, Andrew Marvell, John Milton.
There will be a final test (45 mins) in the second half of the last lecture (14th of July, 2020).
