The 1890s, which are also called the Yellow Nineties or simply the ’Nineties, were a very productive decade in literary terms. As the nineteenth century was drawing to its close, the general cultural mood of a fin de siècle pervaded British culture and Western culture in general, and the British Empire reached its greatest extension. It was in this decade that Oscar Wilde wrote his social comedies and Bram Stoker wrote the most famous vampire novel. But there was so much more being written. In this seminar, we will closely read and contextualise The Importance of Being Earnest and Dracula, but we will also look at the 1890s in general, and we will read some additional literary texts (e.g., poems).
You must have read The Importance of Being Earnest by the second meeting.
