The course will deal with a selection of topics in analytic ethics and practical philosophy in general. It will thus make you acquainted with a wider range of questions than a more conventional, monothematic course does.

It is vital for the course that everybody be prepared to contribute to each session. Please take part in this course only if you are willing to plough through texts for each session and talk about them in the session: to summarize them, to ask and answer questions about them, etc.

Credit points: There will be a written exam, consisting of one or two question(s) from every (or almost every) area we covered. The current plan is for the exam to happen on a Monday afternoon, either towards the end of the teaching period or in the weeks after the teaching period. The questions will be in English; you can reply in English or German, as  you like. Students who would like to write a term paper in addition (unrelated to the passing of, and the grade for, this course), in order to practise their writing skills, are very welcome to do so, and will get detailed advice and feed-back.

This text about the course has been written in July 2020. It will be up-dated in Moodle. Versions of this text that you do not read in Moodle may well be out of date. At the time of writing, it is unclear what the epdemiological situation will be in November 2020 and what we will make of it. In the summer term 2020, an advanced course in practical philosophy was conducted in writing, without meeting; the Seminargespräch took place in curated discussion threads in Moodle. That worked quite well, and it is possible, but not certain, that we will proceed in a similar fashion.

If we meet on Monday afternoons the choice of Mondays won't adhere to a fortnightly rhythm in the strict sense. Please keep open all the Mondays for the moment. Details will follow.

I will do my best to provide more information in Moodly by Monday, 5 October – four weeks before the beginning of the teaching period. I will also try to make available by then in Moodle one or more of the texts that we will look at. My aim is to reduce the strain of the condensed teaching period by enabling you to prepare for the course before it starts.
