This seminar course introduces students to the Black Atlantic via a broad range of diverse artistic expressions, histories, and recorded experiences. This course will include an introduction to relevant theoretical approaches and criticism, including selected chapters from Paul Gilroy’s The Black Atlantic and Tsitsi Ella Jaji’s award-winning study of transatlantic musical traditions Africa in Stereo, as well as discussions and group work on selected works of narrative fiction, poetry, and music.
