Lerninhalte

Dear students:

This is your homework related to my two last lectures (see below). I also attach some literature to solve the last question. Please send me your answers before 18th of June.

Let me know in case you need longer time.

As mentioned in the lecture, your mark will be calculated from the individual marks received in the different questionnaires. Please take them very seriously. IF the level of answers is not acceptable, you will need to go through a written exam.

EXERCISES TO THE LECTURES KERATIN/FIBRIN/SILK FIBRIN

1. Answer 2 of the following questions in detail:

a) How does the addition of citrate buffer, heparin  or EDTA inhibit fibrin polymerization? Describe mechanisms. Which one prevents coagulation in blood vessels?

b) Why is silk fibroin so strong, but at the same time soft and flexible?

c) Why and how is fibrin degradation so well programmed by our body?

d) Bathroxobin and ancrod are snake venom enzymes with a physiological function that has similarities to thrombin. Search for their mechanism of action and explain how they interact with fibrinogen and what are the consequences for fibrin clotting and degradation. (Describe only one of the two compounds)

2. Describe the main structural and assembly features of elastin fibers, and how do the mechanical properties associate with this organization. We have not learned this protein in the course, you have to work it out by yourself. You can use the attached literature (or search for your own). Inspire yourself in the way we described the different proteins during the lecture. Please do not be too short. You are allowed to solve this second question in a tandem (two students) together, but in that case I would expect a bit more detail.
