This course investigates areas in applied linguistics relevant to teachers of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in Germany. We will study key concepts in applied linguistics and second language acquisition and examine how these can be applied to solve real classroom problems in teaching and learning EFL. The course explores ways of using research findings from various linguistic fields such as phonetics & phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, discourse analysis and pragmatics to inform teaching practice.
Goals:
Students will know about a broad range of key concepts in both applied linguistics and TEFL as well as second language acquisition. They will apply their knowledge practically in a workshop (with a focus on a specific skill or linguistic device) and a complex task (Hallet 2012, 2013), which they develop on their own; students will provide concise, nuanced justifications as to why they choose to do what and in which way; students will reflect critically on their own and others’ projects; specifically, regarding input selection, kinds of classroom activities, types of language production, goals and objectives in terms of language learning and production as well as cognitive and affective outcomes.
Methods:
Teacher input, team-taught workshops, peer-assessment, self-study readings.
Assessment:
Regular attendance (You should not miss more than two sessions); team-taught workshop (mündliche Prüfungsleistung); reading reports; a final written proseminar paper/Hausarbeit (schriftliche Prüfungsleistung), in which students are to design a complex task /Komplexe Kompetenzaufgabe (Hallet 2012, 2013)
Materials:
A selection of relevant articles and (excerpts from) books will be made available via Moodle, and students will research contribute materials themselves (team task).
Nb:
This course is primarily for LA/Wipäd students. Other students may be able to attend the course after discussion with the instructor.
For students in the ‘old’ (2007/08, 2010/11) study programme it is possible to take the Ling EFL course for credits in either Methodology (FD) or Linguistics.
