Artificial Intelligence – History, Core Concepts, and Recent Debates
What is Artificial Intelligence (AI) and how does it affect our modern lives? In this seminar, we shall discuss about the history, core concepts and recent debates surrounding AI research. We shall discuss what motivated researchers to build artificial intelligent systems in the first place, what different kinds of AI architectures there are, and how modern AI – which is frequently based on self-learning algorithms – compares to good old-fashioned AI (GOFAI). Along the way we shall investigate both the philosophical foundations of and recent challenges for AI research. We shall particularly focus on questions such as ”What is Intelligence?”, ”How are artificial intelligent systems different from biological ones?”, ”Are AI systems better at making fair decisions than humans?”, ”How can we gain insights into the operation of AI systems that are effectively black boxes to us? And is it a problem if we cannot really understand what an AI system does?”, and ”What happens if an AI becomes smarter than humans?”, etc.
