In this course we will consider grammatical gender, one particular type of nominal classification, in the world's Englishes and also from a further cross-linguistic perspective. Gender is one of the most intriguing grammatical categories: completely absent in many languages, but at the same time present in perhaps up to a third of the world’s languages. Where it is found, it is by definition engrained in the core of the language. In the first half of the course, we will focus on pronominal gender in the world's Englishes and other Germanic languages; in the second half of the course, we focus on further themes related to gender, including the typology, diachrony, and functions of grammatical gender systems. 1. Grammatical gender in German 2. Pronominal gender in English 3. Diachronic change in gender in Indo-European 4. Gender in the world's Englishes I 5. Gender in the world's Englishes II 6.
