This lecture course addresses the main literary developments and, in a few cases, filmic/medial developments that have shaped, negotiated with, and confronted the United Kingdom’s and Ireland’s cultural histories from 1945 to 1980. Due to the exuberance of the cultural production in the second half of the twentieth century, this overview lecture course will cover only 36 years.
We will discuss and contextualize selected works by the following authors: Dylan Thomas, Kingsley Amis, Elizabeth Jennings, Thom Gunn, J.R.R. Tolkien, Samuel Beckett, John Braine, Stevie Smith, John Osborne, Shelagh Delaney, Harold Pinter, William Golding, Anthony Burgess, David Lodge, John Fowles, Tom Stoppard, Ian Fleming, John le Carré, Muriel Spark, Edward Bond, Ted Hughes, Philip Larkin, Seamus Heaney, Doris Lessing, Angela Carter.
There will be a final test (45 mins) in the second half of the last lecture, which will be held on 7 February 2023.
