The main goal of this lecture is to offer insight into both the theoretical background and the empirical motivation of how the construction of meaning in English arises and changes over time. After an introduction to main formal tools, we will analyze several cases of change in meaning primarily following corpus-based evidence. Eventually, we will also take a closer look at cases in which theory and corpus evidence are not enough and thus consider how experimental verification can be designed for different contexts of change. |
