In this class, we will look at the languages of the world from a typological perspective, focusing on cross-linguistic differences and studying them systematically. We will look at possible language universals and also rarities in the languages of the world. Topics to be covered will be primarily from morphology and syntax, including word order, alignment (e.g. ergative, accusative), pronoun usage, tense/aspect/mood/evidentiality, and relative clauses. By the end of the class, students will have a better understanding of what is, and isn’t, possible in the world’s languages. |
