The closer overview lectures get to our present, the more they are confronted with the sheer mass of cultural production of high modernity. While last semester’s lecture course covered 36 years (1945-1980), this lecture course will restrict itself to the last two decades of the twentieth century – and we will still have to drastically reduce the amount of texts we discuss. The lecture course will address and contextualise the main literary developments and some filmic/medial developments that have shaped, negotiated with, and constituted the United Kingdom’s and Ireland’s literary and cultural histories from 1980 to 2000. We will discuss and contextualize selected works by the following authors (slight alterations are possible): Antony Jay / Jonathan Lynn, Caryl Churchill, Howard Brenton, David Hare, Richard Curtis, Ben Elton, Angela Carter, Jeanette Winterson, Kazuo Ishiguro, Julian Barnes, Hanif Kureishi, Salman Rushdie, Martin Amis, Graham Swift, Derek Mahon, Paul Muldoon, Seamus Heaney, Pat Barker, Alan Bennett, Sarah Kane, Mark Ravenhill, Irvine Welsh, James Kelman, Helen Fielding, Jackie Kay, J. K. Rowling, Alan Moore, Zadie Smith.
There will be a final test (45 mins) in the second half of the last lecture, which will be held on 18 July 2023.
Recommended Text: Stephen Greenblatt et al., eds. The Norton Anthology of English Literature. Tenth Edition. Volumes D, E, F. New York: Norton, 2018. ISBN 978-0-393-60313-2 NB: For this lecture course, you will only need volume F. By no means all of the texts we will be discussing are in the Norton Anthology. Those that are not and that you are supposed to read in advance, some of them only partly, will be made available via moodle. You will find the Norton Anthology useful in other courses as well. |
