In the course of this seminar, we will consider the way the structure and meaning of English has developed over time and draw comparisons with other (primarily Germanic) languages - sometimes also with dialects of English. Students can specialize either on a more structure-oriented topic or on one revolving around developments in meaning. A full literature list will be distributed at the beginning of the class, but don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions before the start of the seminar. Also, familiarizing oneself with references as the ones indicated below should facilitate understanding and a smooth start.
