In this seminar we will focus on the spatial aspects of European societies. In a first step, we will explore basic ideas of the Spatial Turn and the sociology of space. Then, we will apply and discuss the spatial sociological perspective of analysis to different aspects of European culture and society. How is Europe perceived as space and represented in spatial images? How can Europe be understood as a political and social space? How is Europe as a space shaped by migration, territorial inequality and border regimes? Which spatial characteristics do European internal border areas show and which challenges emerge in cross-border spatial planning in border regions? The aim of the seminar is to learn and implement a spatial analytical perspective on social processes in Europe.
The seminar is addressed to all those interested in spatial research and sociological perspectives on Europe.
