This course will introduce students to different theoretical and practical perspectives on the role and power of media in society and give them the tools to successfully analyse media themselves. We will first discuss various definitions of media as well as aspects of media history, media theory and media analysis. We will then analyse film sequences of canonical and lesser known British films and series.
Students will be introduced to basics of film and TV studies such as film narrative, cinematic techniques, approaches to contextual interpretation and genre analysis. We will also include other forms of media, such as media events, artworks and digital products, into our critical discussions. Ultimately, this course aims to sharpen students’ awareness of the social and cultural functions of media, how media influence political beliefs, identities and behaviours while at the same time they are being shaped by these.
This term we will focus on the shifting representations of iconic British figures such as James Bond and especially Doctor Who. Consequently, our texts this term will include a James Bond film, at least one Doctor Who episode, as well as the Olympic Opening Ceremony 2012 in London.
Reading texts and/or watching films in preparation for each class is mandatory. In order to gain credits for this course, students will have to participate in a case study which they will present in class. Our last session will be a double session.
