This class will provide students with a survey of topics in English semantics and pragmatics. The aim of this class is to provide students with an overview of the kinds of linguistic phenomena that semanticists investigate and seek to explain and an understanding of the formal models that are proposed to explain said phenomena. These phenomena include, but are not limited to quantification, scope, homogeneity, countability, eventualities, partitivity, and gradability. Each class will consist of a lecture on a different topic, paying particular attention to how the semantic and pragmatic phenomena are modeled within a formal analysis. The class will culminate in a written exam with multiple choice, short answer and/or essay questions. |
