Walter Bagehot's dictum that Dickens was London's "special correspondent for posterity" is routinely quoted in 2012, the year of Dickens's bicentenary. This colloquium seeks to explore the relationship between Dickens, i.e., his writings, and "his" city, even though he wasn't born in it. We will also consider Portsmouth, and perhaps Rochester, as cities that influenced Dickens. We will read, among other texts, passages from Sketches by Boz, Oliver Twist, Bleak House, The Uncommercial Traveller and Our Mutual Friend.
