Course description:
Turn-taking is a defining feature of conversation. We will look at its mechanisms in various settings, exploring the concept of sequentiality. The choice of data will depend on the students’ interests – we could look at a range of situations going beyond face-to-face conversation, e.g. skype conversations, Internet Relay Chat, classroom interaction, lectures etc. Concepts we will look at include adjacency pairs (e.g. question-answer, summons-answer), interruptions, prosody, back-channelling etc.
This class will cover basic academic techniques: students will have the chance to learn how to search for literature, how to do a presentation, how to write a paper.
Students who are interested are required to send me an email by Nov 15, detailing what Prüfungsleistung they are planning to do (benotetes/unbenotetes Referat; benotete Hausarbeit; unbenotetes short paper). |
