In this Proseminar we will consider some of the theories of and latest developments in ELT teaching and their application to teaching English in Germany (Saarland). We also debunk some of the myths surrounding language teaching. By the end of the course students should be able to use their knowledge to interact confidently and knowledgeably with both ELT professionals and non-specialists, and should be able to demonstrate an ability to link theory with practice. Assessment is by means of individual 15 minute presentations, where students demonstrate an ability to pick out the most salient points of a topic and explain it in a way appropriate to the needs of the audience, and a ‘Hausarbeit’ which links ELT theory to everyday practice in Germany (Saarland). As well as presentations there will be short tasks and teacher-led activities to help guide the students through unfamiliar concepts.
Note: This course is primarily for Lehramt/Wipäd students. Other students may be able to attend the course after discussion with the course leader. It is possible to take the course for credits in either Fachdidaktik or Linguistics.
