Being a writer in times of violence – defending a tradition against a colonial power – celebrating a landscape, a people, a history: much of Irish poetry, well into contemporary publications, has been concerned with these themes. Thus, we will discuss a range of poems concerned with Irish politics, with the “Troubles”, the civil war between the IRA and the British/Protestants, with landscape, Irishness, etc. In order to be in a position to appreciate Irish poetry properly, we will also have to discuss the background of the current political situation of Ireland, especially that of the North of Ireland.
Anthologies of Irish poetry will be provided in our departmental library. |
